Restoring & Rebuilding Our Vintage 1950 Silver Streak Clipper
Two things you should know about me: I love all things retro and outdoor adventure … so, I guess it makes sense that for the last few years, I’ve been restoring and rebuilding a 1950 Silver Streak Clipper travel trailer (a trailer designed by Wally Byam, who started Airstream).
Over the time I’ve owned it, I welded a new frame, installed a new axle, new plumbing, new tanks, a new subfloor, new 12V wiring, and in-floor heat. Because the camper didn’t have a bathroom, I decided to deviate from the original floorplan and redesign it in a way that is most functional for the modern era. But being that I am quite fond of mid-century styles, my plan is to keep the original 1950 aesthetic with a lot of modern technology.
Recent progress has included removing and restoring all the exterior windows with new glass and seals, and polishing the window frame for corrosion resistance. This past summer, I replaced the four curved windows, which was far more challenging than it may look.
Oh, and in case you hear me referring to “The Peanut,” that’s what my wife and I lovingly call our camper.
